Tyler Perry defends his use of black stereotypes

By Robert "Rob" Redding Jr.

Editor & Publisher

Jan. 3, 2016, 3 p.m. - Movie mogul Tyler Perry defends his use of "fat" black stereotypes in a new interview.

Perry who has been assailed by movie pioneer Spike Lee for his movies in the past as "coonery," is now defending his films in an interview with New York Magazine's latest edition.

He defended himself against what he called the "offensive" criticism of Lee and others, who say his mediated images can be linked back to "mammy, Amos 'n' Andy."

He said that everyone that means anything to him is fat.

"I was so offended because my aunt's fat. My mother's fat. My cousins are fat," he said.
