Film Review: Human Rights in Quisqueya

May 3, 2010, 1 p.m. -  "Human Rights in Quisqueya" is a first look into a painful reality. That is what you get in this collection of footage showing the overt hatred toward Haitians in the Dominican Republic and the complicated immigration situation in the country. For those who are familiar with the conversation, but unfamiliar with the images associated with the continuing tension between both communities, you can easily be taken by how deep this hatred goes.

The segments of news reporting seem fairly objective in covering the story as many different perspectives from inside the Dominican Republic are shown. From the ethnically charged outbursts of television commentators to the footage of neighborhood mobs seeking to hunt down and remove or kill all Haitians in their communities to the extent that darker Dominican citizens are also victimized, this film is a clear affirmation of a human rights issue that leaves the average spectator wondering where to begin addressing such a problem.

"Human Rights in Quisqueya" is a film that could scare you into doing something...or nothing.
