Attorney Roy Miller's
Inaugural Event Speech for the Arrival Of Change
Jan. 18, 2009, 1 a.m. - Attorney Roy Miller, known for redacting the N-word from a major dictionary, yesterday spoke at Celebrating The Arrival Of Change, "A Collection of Inaugural Events."
"First of all, I want to thank God for allowing me the opportunity to make a difference. I want to thank this great Arrival of Change Event for giving invitation for me to speak at this historic celebration of the election of Barack Obama. I want to thank my loving family, I want to say thanks to my son Roy and my mother Darnell and also I want to thank the media, especially all of the black newspapers, magazines, radio stations and television stations that decided that I would have a voice, including the Redding News Review, Baltimore Representative Melvin Stukes, New York City Councilman Leroy Comrie, the Washington Informer Newspaper and a great lady in Flint Michigan, Ms. Kathryn Williams. And thank you to my publicist Michelle Posey.
"I salute our president-elect Barack Obama. President elect Barack Obama has heart and integrity. I salute him for choosing a strong black woman with so many great qualities. The unity in their marriage seems like a dream. I am still trying to convince myself that this is not a dream.
"But you know what. If Barack can succeed against great odds, so can we. As a professor, I tell my classes at Morehouse College to never fear the odds. Never say impossible, when God is on our side. Do not fear the mountains in your path. He, who made the mountains, can also move a mountain.
"As important as concerns are with the economy, I feel that for Black America , there are three concerns more urgent.
"1. We've got to allow God access back to our hearts.
"2. We must give the family back to the children, a mother and a father.
"3. We've got to do away with black on black crime.
"When we allow God back into our hearts, I feel that we will be working with God and moving in unity with God. We will be evenly yoked in purpose and able to plow a straight path.

"The shortest distance between two points is a straight line, which can be accomplished when God and man work in unity.
"I feel that every child deserves a family, despite the me, myself and I desires of parents. It was God that decided that a child would have a mother and a father, not us.
"We've got to do away with black on black crime. There are people with sick and wicked hearts. We go to hospitals and we visit the sick, but many of the sick are not in hospitals but walk the streets. They rob, they murder and they teach children their wicked ways. We've got to find the medicine to cure their cold hearts and conquer their lusts. How can people hurt people? If it doesn't reach the heart, it really doesn't matter.
"Who has the medicine to cure a sick heart? Who can reach the heart? Where do we go for the cure?
"Women may be a medicine for the cure that will make a man show respect or disrespect. After all, men will dumb down or smart up to be whatever it takes to get the woman. Ladies, I ask that you not reward men for being cold hearted do nothings.
"Black men, I ask that we always give respect and never accept disrespect. Throughout time, in every society, every culture and every group, two things have always been certain. Those that demand respect have always been on top and those that accept disrespect have always been on the bottom. This is why I have argued against n-word usage being used against children. They are the innocent ones and should not be conditioned to accept disrespect.
"We need to fight for our children in education. Too many of our children at very young ages are sent to alternative schools and told that it is the best known option. They are stereo typed as dumb and no good. Alternative School is the first step to the school to prison pipeline. Once labeled as an undesirable and placed on the track leading to prison, it is hard to get off that track. Morale is low and self worth declines. Alternative schools were meant for those with severe discipline problems. Alternative schools are said to be the best way in dealing with children with severe discipline problems. It is available to most all schools and all races. If the water in that well is so sweet, why are mostly only black children drinking from that well. Many private and majority white schools have in-house programs that do not stereotype. Obviously, there is a better way available and that way needs to be available to all children. It does not look right. Justice should not only be fair, but justice should look fair.
"Black men we must seriously come dressed for the role in which we will audition. When we are applying for jobs, we want something that someone else has to offer. We must become actors and we must dress and act for the role in which we audition. Young men must eventually have to pull their pants up to find fulfillment in life and change their mentality if they want to succeed in Life, financially and otherwise. We must realize that most positions that we desire in life already have set roles and set wardrobes. If you went to try out for a role in a cowboy movie, you would not show up for the audition in star wars gear. You would dress appropriately, because you want the role. The role won't change for you. If you want the job, act and dress appropriately.
"Non-major criminal convictions need to automatically fall off a criminal record every ten years, similar to what happens with credit. Too many black men have turned their lives around, but are still unemployable. A person just coming to America is not held to the same background standard as a person having lived in the United States all of his life. If a person can stay crime free for ten years, he deserves to have non-serious convictions automatically erased from his record. This second chance would give a wiser person something valuable to treasure and not want to lose again.
"Low level misdemeanor crimes should be dealt with by issuing citations and not as arrest records.
"I would like to see homes not being able to be foreclosed on so easily. I would like laws that would make it where mortgage companies have to go for a home buyers income tax returns and garnishment of wages, before being allowed to foreclose.
"I would like to see the United States barter with ordinary people for them to become community policemen and compensate them by having their mortgages paid by companies that have borrowed the $700 billion of taxpayer's money. We need more policemen and people need help in keeping their homes.
"Last of all, I would like to see a law made demanding that all guns manufactured must have a dead bolt lock made into the chamber and can only be used by who ever has the key. This would go a long way towards children getting access to a gun and using it. And it would eliminate the incentive for most thieves stealing guns, if they don't have the keys.
"I thank you for your time and patience."
