WASHINGTON, April 20, 2007, 7:15 p.m. - Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones this week received two awards from the National Urban League and the North-American Interfraternity Conference, Inc.
Rep. Jones, an Ohio Democrat, on Tuesday became the first woman representative to be presented with one of the highest honors the NIC presents, the NIC Silver Medal, she said.
"I am extremely honored to have received this award," said Jones, who received the award during a press conference.
The medal is presented to fraternity and sorority alumni who have provided significant leadership for causes that advance the highest ideals of fraternalism and who champion causes that positively impact the fraternal community.
"As a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., I made a lifetime commitment to service," she said. "It is my hope that I can be a role model to all Greeks and inspire them to always work for the greater good of the community."
