WASHINGTON, Sept. 09, 2006, 2:50 a.m. - Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson yesterday said a black Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress in Minnesota is a “radical black Muslim with ties to a racist extremist group.”
Peterson, founder and president of the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny, is concerned that Keith Ellison’s victory in last Tuesday’s primary has positioned him to become the first Muslim ever elected to Congress.

“The Democratic Party has no shame," he said. "Democrats supported Jim Crow and segregationist Bull Connor. Democrats elected Robert Byrd (D-WV), an unapologetic ex-Klansman to the Senate. Now they’re backing a black Muslim with ties to Louis Farrakhan. Who will they elect next?
“The issue is not Ellison’s religious affiliation, the issue is his extremist agenda and ties to domestic enemies," he added. "This is an irresponsible and dangerous precedent being set by Democrats at a time when our nation is engaged in a bloody war with Islamic terrorists abroad.”
Ellison’s campaign and his support from Democrats has garnered national attention because of Ellison’s controversial past and association with the Nation of Islam, according to a news release. Ellison, who is favored to beat his Republican opponent, has called for an immediate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq.
Ellison has also called for the impeachment of President Bush; and he supports reparations for slavery, according to the release.
Ellison was not immediately available for comment.
