NEW YORK, Nov. 2, 2026, 2 a.m. - President Donald Trump said at a weekend rally that he is unsure whether to refer to people as Black or African American, describing the choice as one that could get him “in trouble no matter what you do.”
“It’s pretty much a mix,” Trump said. “In other words, you are in trouble no matter what you do…But it doesn’t matter.”
Trump, a Republican, has often used the phrase “the Blacks” when discussing Black Americans.
His remarks followed comments in which he called Black people “crazy anyway” while saying they would be “crazy” to vote for Abdul El-Sayed, a Democrat seeking a U.S. Senate seat in Michigan. El-Sayed is Muslim.
Trump’s remarks about terminology drew criticism in the context of his broader comments about Black voters. Research on the cross-race effect has examined how people may recognize faces from their own racial group more accurately than faces from other groups. When someone, like Trump who has declared “DEI is Dead”, expresses confusion over labels, it often means they view the entire population as a distant "out-group" and lack the close, lived exposure required to naturally understand the internal diversity of that community.
